A tariff unit rate plays a major part in determining how much you pay for your energy services, so all customers should understand how they work.
We have created this guide which aims to help you understand exactly what you’re paying for when you choose to buy your energy from us.
What are energy tariff units?
Tariff units are essentially a form of measurement which explains how much you are paying for your energy. Their figure is represented as pence per kilowatt-hour (p/kWh).
How are energy tariffs calculated?
Here at British Gas we aim to deliver tariffs which are easy to understand.
The energy unit rates for your chosen tariff will vary based on the region you live in, your payment method and the tariff itself. You will have one unit rate for gas and one for electricity. Your energy charges are calculated by multiplying your energy usage in kilowatt hours by the unit rate.
You will also pay a standing charge. A standing charge is a fixed amount that is applied to your gas and electricity bill daily.
Some customers will be on a tiered payment structure which means you won’t pay a standing charge. If you’re unsure how you pay, please check your latest bill.
How can I check my tariff unit rates?
Here at British Gas, we believe our customers should understand every aspect of their energy bill and this is why we offer an tariff unit rates tool. This is easy to use and all you need to put in your postcode to find out how much your unit rate will be in your region.
